The Purpose of this Rotary Information Pamphlet is -

expect of you as a member.

might have about Rotary in general and our club in particular.
What is Rotary
Rotary is an international service association of business and
professional leaders, united worldwide, who conduct humanitarian projects,
encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and work towards building
goodwill and peace in the world.
Rotarians meet weekly to enjoy each other's fellowship and discuss ways
to serve others.
Rotary has compassion for the underprivileged, the ill and the disabled,
many of whom are the beneficiaries of over 50 000 service projects conducted by
Rotary Clubs worldwide each year.
The first Rotary Club was organized in Chicago (USA) in 1905 by Paul
Harris. This club met in rotation at
the offices of the members, thus the name Rotary. There are at present 30 149
Rotary Clubs in 163 countries with a total membership of over one million two
hundred thousand Rotarians. As a
Rotarian, you will be a member of the Rotary Club of Paarl, which in turn is a
member of Rotary International.
The Rotary world is divided into territories within which a group of
clubs are associated. These territories
are known as Rotary Districts of which there are 530. Our club is in
District 9350 which encompasses 3 countries – Western Cape Province and part of
Northen Cape Province in the Republic of South Africa, the whole of Namibia and
Angola, a new addition to the wolrdwide Rotary family with one club, comprising
61 clubs with a membership of over 1600 Rotarians.
Rotary International is governed by a president (chosen annually) and a
board of directors. Annually, each District elects a District Governor and each
club elects its President and board of directors.

Everyone needs to network.
Rotary comprises a cross section of the business community. Its members come from all walks of
life. Rotarians help one another and
collectively help others. 3.
Personal Growth and Development.
Membership in Rotary continues one's growth and education in human
relations and personal development. 4.
Leadership Development.
Rotary is an organisation of leaders and successful people. Holding Rotary office is like a tertiary
education in leadership – learning how to motivate influence and lead
leaders. 5.
Citizenship in the Community.
Membership in a Rotary club makes one a better citizen. A Rotary club consists of the most active
members of any community. 6.
Continuing Education. Each week at the Rotary meeting there is a program
of speakers and topics designed to keep one informed as to what is going on
in the community, nation and world. 7.
Fun. Rotary is
fun – a lot of fun. Each meeting is
fun; the club projects are fun; and the service is fun. 8.
Public Speaking Skills.
Rotary develops confidence, skill and opportunity in public speaking. 9.
World Citizenship.
Rotarians wear a pin that says "Rotary International". Every Rotarian is welcome – even
encouraged – to attend the meetings of 30 000 clubs world-wide. 10.
Assistance When Travelling. Because there are Rotary clubs everywhere, many a
travelling Rotarian who has needed a doctor, lawyer, hotel, dentist, advice,
etc. has found it through Rotary. |

WHY JOIN ROTARY? 11.
Entertainment. Every Rotary club and district has activities that provide
diversion. Conferences, conventions
and assemblies provides entertainment in addition to information, education
and service. 12.

Rotary develops one's personality, social and people skills. Rotary is for people who like people. 13.

high school and young adults clubs, spouse clubs and programs, and a host of
activities designed to assist family members in growth and the development of
family values. 14.

Every Rotarian is expected to promote the growth and development of
his or her profession or vocation, to pass on this information to young
people and to improve performance in the job. 15.
Ethics. Rotarians
live by the 4-way Test which is the ethical test of the things that we think,
say or do. 16.
Cultural Awareness.
Rotarians are drawn from every religion, culture, creed, language,
political persuasion and colour in the world. 17.
Prestige. Rotarians
are leaders of business, the professions, arts, government, sports, military,
religion and all disciplines. Rotary
is the oldest and most prestigious service organisation in the world. Not everyone is invited to join Rotary. 18.
Nice People. Rotarians
above all are nice people. They are
important people who nevertheless adhere to the policy that while it is nice
to be important, it is more important to be nice. 19.
No "Official Creed".
Rotary has no secret handshake, no secret policy, no official creed,
no secret meetings or rituals. It is
transparent. 20.
The Opportunity to Serve.
Rotary's business is mankind; its product is service. This is the best reason for becoming a
Rotarian; the chance to put something back into society and to sense the
self-fulfilment that comes in the process. Rotarians believe that
"Service above Self" holds rich rewards for each person's life. |
