The annual Winelands Cycle Race, presented by Paarl Rotary, was once again a great success and drew more than 1700 cyclists. Here they take off from Wellington en route to Riebeek Kasteel. They cycled a 102 km route through vineyards and wheatlands in preparation for the Cape Town Cycle Tour (MORE PICS BELOW).

REUNION. Marike ten Hoven (second right), former Rotary exchange student from the Netherlands, visited the Rotary Club of Paarl twenty years after she was a student at Paarl Gymnasium. She brought her family with her to celebrate her 40th birthday. From left are her husband Chris Paulsen, Marita van der Sluys (Rotary president), Lynne Harris (her host mother) and Rotarian Trevor Harris (her host father). In front are her children, Robin and Laura. The family lives in Denmark. Click on Read More for more Rotary pics.
ART. The Paarl Rotary “Artists for Artists” independent art auction was held recently in association with an auction house. The exhibition consisted of more than 100 works by 35 local artists for which one could bid online and on the live auction. The proceeds go to support of disadvantaged art students.
Wheelchair assistance
Paarl Rotary provides wheelchairs to needy recipients with the help of Rotary's Wheelchair Foundation. We are assisted by local entrepreneur Tommy Goliath (left), who sources recipients and does wheelchair repairs. Below is a short summary of some of the other projects:
Paarl, renowned for its illustrious history and haunting scenery, is situated 57 km from Cape Town in the winelands of the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is dominated by mountain ranges and the large granite outcrop of Paarl Rock, after which our town is named. The first settlers in the 17th century called the rock the Parel (Dutch for pearl) for the way it glistened after rain.
MARITA VAN DER SLUYS
As one of the oldest Rotary clubs in District 9350, the Rotary Club of Paarl has built a tradition over more than 80 years of service above self to improve the quality of life for those communities that are less fortunate than ourselves.
